Porcelain Crowns (Caps)

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size.  A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth.  They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced.  Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Reasons for crowns:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.
  • Tooth has a root canal.

What does getting a crown involve?

The crown procedure usually requires a single appointment for completion.  By using the most advanced computer technology, a beautiful, custom shaded porcelain crown can be fabricated by Dr. Grammer while you wait.  This means that you only have to be numb once, and don't have to wear a temporary for 3 weeks waiting for a remote laboratory to finish your crown.  It also means that you won't have to come back for a second appointment, saving you valuable time.

Once the tooth has been cleaned and prepared for the crown, a computer will scan its exact shape and size, and the crown will be designed on the computer by Dr. Grammer.  This will then be sent to a milling unit, and the crown will be formed from a solid block of extremely hard porcelain.  Final shading and characterization can be completed, and then will be ready for final try in to assure the fit is perfect.  The crown is then permanently cemented into place, and will be ready to chew on later that day.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
